Student leadership

Student leadership

Our student leaders

At Portway Primary School, we are proud to be a school where children learn, develop and grow. During their time at Portway, our pupils are given the opportunity to take a more active role in school life through our student leadership groups. From year 2 through to year 6, pupils have a wide variety of roles that they can be involved in each year. At the beginning of the school year, all pupil leadership roles are decided via an election process in each class. All children have the opportunity to deliver a speech detailing why they will be a good representative for their class. The children then vote and the two children with the most votes are elected as the representatives for each pupil leadership group in their class. As a result of this process, our pupils learn more about the British value of democracy. They also develop the following skills:

These vital skills are embedded into our pupil voice curriculum and are designed to support pupils with developing life skills through a range of projects, social action and school based activities. Pupils will develop, strengthen and refine these skills as they move through each year group.

At Portway, there are several pupil voice groups which ensure a true representation of all pupils and offer pupils the opportunity to effect real change within different topic areas.

Our student leadership groups

Pupil Parliament
  • Our Pupil Parliament members represent the views of all our pupils. It gives children the opportunity to make their voices heard and feel part of the whole school community. At Portway Primary School, each year 2 members from each class are elected by their peers to represent their views and ideas. These members are invited to Pupil Parliament meetings to discuss ways to improve the school and to plan upcoming events. The outcomes are then relayed back to the rest of the pupils in class or via assemblies.
Eco Warriors
  • Our Eco Warriors have a very important role in school to help us be as Eco friendly for our environment as we can. There are 2 representatives from each class. The eco warriors attend meetings each half term and focus on different areas such as waste, transport and energy. They have created an action plan to support the school with becoming more sustainable.  This year the Eco Warriors are working hard to achieve the Eco Schools Green Flag award with distinction.
 Sports Leaders
  • Our sports leaders are specially trained at the beginning of the year by Portway’s PE team to lead and manage games and activities during break and lunchtimes with a range of pupils. The sports leaders set up the equipment during both sessions, encourage pupils to engage in one of the activities and referee the sporting activities.  Our sports leaders also help to organise events such as Sports Day and Sports Relief.
 Health Leaders
  • Our health leaders are KS2 pupils that are passionate about physical and mental health. These pupils share health tips during assemblies and support younger pupils with their lunch choices. The health leaders role is to promote health and wellbeing at Portway. This year our health leaders will undertake first aid training – an invaluable life skill.
 Art Ambassadors
    • Our Arts Ambassadors are KS2 pupils who are keen to promote more artistic and creative opportunities for pupils during art and DT lessons. They actively advocate for enhanced opportunities during art, Design and Technology lessons, workshops, and projects, fostering the development of their own artistic skills. These Ambassadors facilitate the setup of art supplies for other students and engage in various art focused activities throughout the year. This includes crafting 3D models for Portway’s displays or special events like Christmas celebrations and performances. They actively contribute to art initiatives and occasionally take the initiative to independently plan and guide projects, like organising Christmas bauble decorations in the playground.
